James T. (Jim) Stuart is a Partner in the Shawnee firm of Stuart & Clover, established before statehood in 1904, emphasizing his practice in the areas of estates and trusts, real property, oil and gas, banking, and commercial law and litigation. He graduated with a Business Degree from Central State University in 1975 and received his Juris Doctor from the University Of Tulsa College Of Law in 1978.

Jim served as 2013 President of the Oklahoma Bar Association (OBA) and its 17,000 member lawyers. He also served as 2013 President of the Southern Conference of Bar Presidents, comprised of Bar Associations from 17 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands. He served on the OBA Board of Governors in 2008-2010. Jim was previously a Director of the OBA Young Lawyer’s Division, and received its 2013 Young Lawyer’s 2013 Friend/Fellow Award.  Jim served on the Board of Editors of the Oklahoma Bar Journal in 2005-2010. He served as a Trustee of the Oklahoma Bar Foundation, and is a recipient of the Foundation’s 2013 Distinguished Service Award.  He served by 1991 Supreme Court appointment on a Panel of the Oklahoma Court of Appeals, and is currently a Supreme Court Justice for the Absentee Shawnee Tribe of Indians.  Jim has served as both an OBA Mock Trial Site Coordinator and a National Championship Scoring Judge (2006). Jim is a past President of the Pottawatomie County Bar Association, and a member of both the Oklahoma and American Bar Associations (ABA).  He has been a multi-term Delegate to the OBA Annual Meeting, and an Oklahoma Delegate to the 2012-2014 ABA Annual Meetings. Jim is a Benefactor Fellow of the Oklahoma Bar Foundation, a Sustaining Fellow of the National Conference of Bar Presidents, and Life Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and Co-Chair of the OBA Fellows of the American Bar Foundation. He was a Director of Legal Aid of Western Oklahoma.  He is a member of Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity.  Jim was previously a Business Law instructor at Oklahoma Baptist University and has served on its Shawnee OBU Advisory Board. Jim has held an “AV Preeminent” rating through Lexis Nexis/Martindale-Hubbell.

Jim was one of the initial organizers of Leadership Oklahoma, and a member of its Class IV. He is a past President of the Shawnee Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow.  Jim was recipient of the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) 2013 Distinguished Alumni award, and served 2010-2019 on the Board of Trustees of the UCO Foundation.  Jim has served as an officer and board member of various Shawnee civic and service organizations, including the Shawnee Economic Development Foundation, Chamber of Commerce, Shawnee Forward, Shawnee Educational Foundation, Volunteer Health Clinic, Pottawatomie County Historical Society, United Way, Y.M.C.A., Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, Youth & Family Resource Center, Unity Health Center Foundation, Shawnee Community Foundation, Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art, and the City of Shawnee Housing Authority.  Jim was named the recipient of the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce 2015 Business Person of the Year award. Jim was a contributing member of the Shawnee News-Star Editorial Board.  He currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Communities Foundation of Oklahoma.

Jim and his wife Kathy are lifelong Shawnee residents, residing in the Stuart family home built by his grandparents in 1928.  He graduated from Shawnee High School in 1971, where he was elected President of his Senior Class, named as “Best All-Around”, attended Oklahoma Boys State, and was selected along with former O.U. quarterback Steve Davis in 1970 as an Oklahoma delegate to attend Boys Nation in Washington, D. C..  He later served as a multi-term Boys State Counselor.  Jim and Kathy are the parents of three daughters, Emily Stuart Thompson, Rachel Stuart Schones and Sarah Stuart Rader, and have two (2) grandsons, McAfee James Thompson and Warren Neely Rader, and three (3) granddaughters, Mary Stuart Thompson, Betty Clay Rader and Xoey Schones.
